Hi, all:

This is my first post here. Does anyone know what this classic Dylan song is all about?

Well, let's see, it's about 7 minutes long for starters.

It is an outtake from Blood on the Tracks (so it can hardly be called a classic, as it was only released on Biograph). I also have it on a bootleg called Blood on the Tapes. The lyrics are NOT available on bobdylan.com

But I will make them available here

I'm not very big on lyric analysis, but it definitely fits in well with the themes on Blood on the Tracks, and I think it would have been the perfect ending song, the coda to Tangled Up In Blue.

Everything went from bad to worse, money never changed a thing,
Death kept followin', trackin' us down, at least I heard your bluebird sing.
Now somebody's got to show their hand, time is an enemy,
I know you're long gone,
I guess it must be up to me.

If I'd thought about it I never would've done it, I guess I would've let it slide,
If I'd lived my life by what others were thinkin', the heart inside me would've died.
I was just too stubborn to ever be governed by enforced insanity,
Someone had to reach for the risin' star,
I guess it was up to me.

Oh, the Union Central is pullin' out and the orchids are in bloom,
I've only got me one good shirt left and it smells of stale perfume.
In fourteen months I've only smiled once and I didn't do it consciously,
Somebody's got to find your trail,
I guess it must be up to me.

It was like a revelation when you betrayed me with your touch,
I'd just about convinced myself that nothin' had changed that much.
The old Rounder in the iron mask slipped me the master key,
Somebody had to unlock your heart,
He said it was up to me.

Well, I watched you slowly disappear down into the officers' club,
I would've followed you in the door but I didn't have a ticket stub.
So I waited all night 'til the break of day, hopin' one of us could get free,
When the dawn came over the river bridge,
I knew it was up to me.

Oh, the only decent thing I did when I worked as a postal clerk
Was to haul your picture down off the wall near the cage where I used to work.
Was I a fool or not to try to protect your identity?
You looked a little burned out, my friend,
I thought it might be up to me.

Well, I met somebody face to face and I had to remove my hat,
She's everything I need and love but I can't be swayed by that.
It frightens me, the awful truth of how sweet life can be,
But she ain't a-gonna make me move,
I guess it must be up to me.

We heard the Sermon on the Mount and I knew it was too complex,
It didn't amount to anything more than what the broken glass reflects.
When you bite off more than you can chew you pay the penalty,
Somebody's got to tell the tale,
I guess it must be up to me.

Well, Dupree came in pimpin' tonight to the Thunderbird Cafe,
Crystal wanted to talk to him, I had to look the other way.
Well, I just can't rest without you, love, I need your company,
But you ain't a-gonna cross the line,
I guess it must be up to me.

There's a note left in the bottle, you can give it to Estelle,
She's the one you been wond'rin' about, but there's really nothin' much to tell.
We both heard voices for a while, now the rest is history,
Somebody's got to cry some tears,
I guess it must be up to me.

So go on, boys, and play your hands, life is a pantomime,
The ringleaders from the county seat say you don't have all that much time.
And the girl with me behind the shades, she ain't my property,
One of us has got to hit the road,
I guess it must be up to me.

And if we never meet again, baby, remember me,
How my lone guitar played sweet for you that old-time melody.
And the harmonica around my neck, I blew it for you, free,
No one else could play that tune,
You know it was up to me.

Actually...lyrics are on bd.com (I just looked em up)

Verse one is an introduction to the human condition, and Dylan's relation to it (IMO...hehe). The bluebird may be a reference to the scene in 'Sleeping Beauty' where Aurora sings in the woods prior to meeting Prince Philip.

Must go and check my blood sugar. That was quite a pizza I ate tonite.

"The Last Word of a Bluebird" by Robert Frost

As I went out a Crow
In a low voice said, "Oh,
I was looking for you.
How do you do?
I just came to tell you
To tell Lesley (will you?)
That her little Bluebird
Wanted me to bring word
That the north wind last night
That made the stars bright
And made ice on the trough
Almost made him cough
His tail feathers off.
He just had to fly!
But he sent her Good-by,
And said to be good,
And wear her red hood,
And look for the skunk tracks
In the snow with an ax-
And do everything!
And perhaps in the spring
He would come back and sing."

I think K Valois must be waiting to get some sensible replies to his question on Up to Me . And seriously folks, I think we need to work a bit harder on this.

The line that stands out to me is the Old Rounder with the Iron Mask and the Master Key.

Definitions of 'rounder' (wiktionary)

1)A Methodist preacher traveling a circuit, also referred to as a circuit rider.
2) A railroad man who worked at a roundhouse, operating the turntable.
3) A person whose earns a living by playing cards.
4) A person who makes the rounds of bars, saloons, and similar establishments; figuratively, a debaucher or roué

Two highlighted are the most likely, IMO

Dylan has a preoccupation with keys. Do I know why? Not really, but his keys seem to relate to some hidden knowledge. Masks also appear a lot in Dylan's work; hidden or deceiving identities, for a start.

But in that verse, Dylan is the one with the power to unlock that person's heart. And so through the song, all the great challenges are up to him to deal with. Most of them seem to relate to close friends or girl-friends who have come to depend on him

1) Up to him to show his hand

2) Up to him to reach for the risin' star

3) Up to him to find your trail

4) Up to him to unlock your heart

5) Up to him to get free

6 )Up to him to protect your identity

7) Up to him to make the move

8) Up to him to tell the tale after biting off more than he can chew

9) Cross the line

10) Cry some tears

11) Hit the road,

12) Playing that tune

I'm going with the professional card player, in the beginning of the song he mentions that someone's going to have to show their hand. "Now somebody's got to show their hand"

Playing the hand you're dealt figure prominently in a lot of Bob's songs. I do not see a preacher in this song at all.

Here come the nurse,
with money in her purse,
here come the ladies and men.
You push it all in,
and you've no chance to win,
you play 'em on down to the end.

The game's gotten old,
the deck's gone cold.

Looks like Dylan is playing the game of life...seeing the whole thing as some gamble..for everyone. Even the nurse with a little amount in her purse has to play. Maybe it's all gone on a little too long?

But isn't the movie and the song truly about a postmodern man trying to deal with the struggles of life in a neoclassical world where a cold, unfeeling God has dealt him a losing hand, and he is rebelling against his destiny by trying to defeat his Father?

But in the song Up to Me, we have the sense that Dylan is the only one that's truly in charge. I'm not aware of any of his 'card-playing songs' where he sees himself as a loser...far from it. In fact, in Things Have Changed, we have a picture of a man standing back from the game, someone who's 'out of range'.

Nothing need mangle one's brain these days...it's all available at the touch of a button. Did I read somewhere that Dylan warned his kids about the perils of computers?

we're actually having a backchannel discussion. I think he's a little shy, and not sure what to make of our playfulness. I'm encouraging him to join in the fun publicly.

oh .. he really should, I 'm curious to know his thoughts on it.

I don't like to think folk are frightened off by our 'playfulness'.. I'm going to be V. serious from now on *winks*

Hi, again:

I never thought that I would get nearly 100 replies!!!!! And, I must admit that many members here employ a great sense of humor and wit! I assure you that I will join in on the fun and nonsense from time to time.

I have re-discovered Bob Dylan in the last week or two. I have purchased about a dozen of his remastered CDs and I'm learning to play many of his songs. Yes. I sing and play guitar, too. HOW many other members play guitar??? In time, I would love to pick your brains concerning chords, keys, etc.

In the meantime, if anyone knows ANYTHING about "Up to Me," I would appreciate your insights!!!!!!!!

Hi Karl

What do you think UTM is about.....?

Hi, Kent:

I honestly do not have a clue!!!!! From what I've read, "Up to Me" was recorded during the "Blood on the Tracks" sessions. But, for whatever reason(s), it was left off the album. I believe that Dylan was undergoing a stressful time with the dissolution of his marriage-- an unfortunate but great source for creativity!!!!

So, and this is only a stab in the dark, was Dylan referring to Sara???

You are absolutely in the same boat as all of us. Many purported Dylan scholars don't really have a clue, but they've made a lot of money in Bob's name pretending that they do. While Dylan has steadfastly maintained that the album is not about Sara and him, Jakob has said that he can't listen to the album because it sounds like his parents talking to each other. In his denial that the songs are autobiographical, Dylan says that they were inspired by the poems of Anton Chekhov. Now of course, this is coming from a man who in his early days as a musician, used to go on radio shows and tell the host that he had dropped out of high school and run away to join a carnival, and that he learned to play music and write songs from the carnies. I don't know where you can read about Dylan doing this (other than right here, right now), but I heard him do it when listening to a a bootleg called Folksinger's Choice, which is a recording of the Cynthia Gooding show from February or March of 1962. Here's a link to more info about this recording: http://bobsboots.com/CDs/cd-f14.html

So we know Dylan is able to lie with easy facility, he is after all the Joker AND the Thief.

A few years ago when told of the enduring popularity of Blood on the Tracks he told Mary Travers: "A lot of people tell me they enjoy that album. It's hard for me to relate to that. I mean it, you know, people enjoying that type of pain, you know?" What pain Bob? Aren't they just riffs on Chekhov poems set to music???

So can Up to Me be about Sara? Certainly. Can it be about Chekhov? Hmmm.

Hey, congratulations on rediscovering Dylan recently. How old are you? Tell us more about your Dylan fetish (down Lazy Slut)

Sorry, I digressed.

I became a Dylan fan fairly seriously when I was about 14-15 years old in 1975 or so. I kind of came to him through like The Beatles a lot at that time, and reading stuff about them, and finding a connection with Bob Dylan. So I had liked him for quite a long time, and then in February 2002, I went to see him at a concert, and there was something about that show that really got to me, and this show was the 4th time I had seen him in concert since 1978. I came home from that show and started looking for bootlegs. In my search for boots, I also started becoming active on the official Sony Bob Dylan discussion board. I started getting bootlegs and I don't think I listened to anything but Dylan for over a year. Eventually I got so many bootlegs I didn't even have time to listen to them all, or catalog them. And as they've become easier to obtain by downloading, I have many that I've only listened to snippets of on my computer, or not at all.

What I like about this thread is that Up to Me is a song I heard years ago, but it never jumped out at me for some reason. When you started this thread, it made me seek it out and pay attention to it. It's a great song. I always wonder why Bob leaves great songs in the vault. Mississippi, Blind Willie McTell and Series of Dreams are other examples. Although in the case of Mississippi, when he first wrote it (for Time Out of Mind), he did not like the sound that Lanois was getting, and he actually had a more specific sound in mind, and saved it for his next album, which he planned to produce.

I say welcome too.

And me, what I like about this thread is that you (you general) make me envy to go deeper in the song of Bob Dylan.

I am 58 years old and I first fell in love with Dylan's music in 1965. I heard the Byrds' version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" and it knocked me out. I had just bought my first 45 single-- Donovan's "Catch the Wind." So, I guess I've always had a thing for folk or folk-rock. Then, I began to love Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone," "Positively 4th Street," etc. I was hooked on his stuff-- loving Dylan's voice, even though many of my friends did not!!!

Although I always kept up with Dylan and his work throughout the decades, I played his CDs somewhat sporadically and listened to others-- Beatles, Stones, Moody Blues, etc. However, about two weeks ago suddenly I caught "Dylanmania" again!!!! Now, in the car or at home, I'm listening to all his great songs and playing them at "open mics" and to my students. I teach high school and college-- and my students are a "captive audience" for me!!!!!

I really like the website, "Dylanchords.com." But, sometimes I wonder how accurate the tabs are there. That's why I asked about Forum members here, if any played guitar.

Thin Man:

There's even a better version by McGuinn of "Up to Me." It's on his 1976 LP, Cardiff Rose. And, although I love the BYRDS, I think that Dylan's version on Biograph is superior!
