Wait, did tpicco get access to Landy's account? Folksinger's Choice was the name of the radio show. Roll on John is absolutely a folk song.

excellent question. I tend to view folk music as the music produced by a local region, that has become associated with that region. I think the modern stereotype of folk music makes it more appalachian/irish. although it can be brazilian, russian, african, and can break down to even further subsets within those broad geographic boundaries. But could Dylan ever truly be called a folk musician, simply because he sang some songs from the folk genre? He was signed to a major label, had international appeal, and was mostly wearing a Woody Guthrie mask at the beginning.

I think your broadly right, I regard Folk music as songs which came from the streets and fields by working people about their world around them and not"written" by a lyricist, of course the media consider anyone who plays an accoustic guitar to be a folk singer

Well... I would include any musician who writes songs in the folk tradition. There is a singer/performer/sing wirter named Gordon Bok who does many traditional New England whaling-era folk songs, but he also writes songs steeped in the tradition, songs that sound like the traditional ones...
I think, as nit picky as I am, that the parameters ought to be looser... I could make a case for Hank Williams as a folk singer in some ways. He was rooted in the local traditions...
