Why Charlie believes in God.

I have a Maltese "friend" (we used to be mates but when you get to know some people well you realise it's best to make a clean break and get them out of your life for good) who used to always tell me "God exists man, you think he doesn't but I'm right, you'll see". He would go on and on about his beliefs (which weren't very well thought out) as if he was 100% right and damn anyone who argues about it. I'd known him for about 9 years although we'd lost contact for a period of about 4 years. I reminded him that he used to talk about Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne all the time and he used to say that life is a joke and he used to be quite insulting to Jehovah's witnesses, telling them that the devil would "fuck them in the ass". He told me that he always believed in the Devil but not in God, then one day he watched "the decline of Western civilisation part 2: the metal years" a documentary about music. Ozzy Osbourne was interviewed for this show and he was asked if he believed in God, Ozzy replied "of course I believe in God, if there's a Devil then there must be a God" Charlie said "I thought wow, Ozzy's right man" and from that moment forward became a Jehovah's Witness, he didn't do any of the knocking on doors bugging people or even going to church, prayer meetings or whatever, he just collected issues of the watchtower (which he never read) and told people how wrong they were. The last time I saw him was in Amsterdam just before midnight on the eve of this millennium, maybe there's a significance to that ;D

That's a 100% true story and is not meant as some kind of attack on a certain poster's faith, it's just that I was reminded of him while posting here.

We discussed religion a lot, his main argument against evolution was that Charles Darwin recanted on his death bed and said that he was wrong and God existed, this was a lie made up by so-called Christians, what sort of people would would lie about a dying man's last words?

Whenever I would talk about evolution he'd say "evolution? bollocks!" he once said "you think I evoluted (I never bothered telling him that this was not the correct past tense of the verb evolve) from a monkey?" which was funny because if you met him you'd be sure he had!

Charlie was obsessive about David Attenborough (I'm a big fan myself) and he would always watch his documentaries when they were on TV. One day we were watching one of them in Charlie's flat and Attenborough spoke at length about evolution, Charlie went silent and wouldn't even look at me. His dilemma was this: David Attenborough knows everything and the bible is the word of God, therefore how can they both be right? His solution was simply to avoid the subject of evolution completely from then on, when I brought it up he would just change the subject.

I have deep spiritual beliefs.

But I do not believe in a God outside us, and I do not support or believe in Christianity, altho' I have to say the ideals spouted by Jesus Christ in the Bible are pretty decent... but the rest of that book, including all of St Paul's garbage, should be tossed.

I do not believe in creationism, either... but evolution is not exactly scientific fact... it is a pretty good theory, and makes a certain amount of sense, but there is no proof, really...
